X Factor judge Louis Walsh has tipped one of his rival judges' acts to win the series after backing painter and decorator Matt Cardle to lick the competition.

Walsh, who is looking after the older acts, told Hello! Magazine that he thought one of Dannii Minogue's charges would triumph in the show.

Speaking ahead of next weekend's first live rounds, he said: 'The winner is going to be the one with the most votes, but I think Matt has got something very special about him.'

Until a last minute change in rules, 27-year-old Cardle would have been in Walsh's group of older contestants.

But the minimum age for the 'overs' group this year is 29, rather than the previous 26, which means the wannabe will be in the boys' group with Minogue as his mentor.

Walsh - who was photographed at his new minimalist Miami home for the interview - said despite initially struggling to get on with Aussie judge Minogue, the pair have formed an alliance against fellow judges Cheryl and Simon.

'That is true and it will be like that this year,' he said.

Her audition was Cheryl Cole's favourite of the series.

And it seems that first impressions really do count, after Cher Lloyd won a place in The X Factor's live shows  -  even though she struggled to sing a single note in her latest performance.

Of course for many it was bad news, including an early favourite. It was a 'no' from Cheryl for  Zimbabwean singer Gamu Nhengu, who had won many fans with her quirky singing style.

And Cheryl admitted that putting Cher through to the next stage was one of the 'hardest decisions' she had made on the show, as the 17-year-old was overcome with tears during the judges' houses stage of the competition.

However, the decision sparked fury amongst X Factor fans, who felt that the decision should have been made on the performance that was screened as part of the Judges' Houses stage at the weekend.

There were also concerns that the wannabe was too emotionally fragile to cope with the pressures of continuing on the show after she was seen to breakdown before Cheryl and her friend, Black Eyed Pea Will.I.Am.

Claude Knights, director of charity Kidscape, said: 'She's too vulnerable - further exposure seems quite risky and foolhardy.'

The drama came as the 32 hopefuls were whittled down to 12 ahead of the live shows, which begin next week.

  • Gamu could get another lifeline as judges to be given choice of  fourth 'wildcard'

She's divided opinion since her very first audition - but X Factor fans have been left furious after Katie Waissel was chosen to go through to the live stages of the show at the expense of favourite Gamu Nhengu.

Gamu's omission was thought by many to be a mistake, with more than 25,000 joining a Facebook group called 'Gamu should have got through' within three hours of the show airing.

However, it has emerged that Gamu and other hopefuls who failed to be selected at the Judges' House stage may be chosen to continue on the show as 'wildcards'.

Next week's show is expected to reveal that X Factor head honcho Simon Cowell will allow each judge a FOURTH choice to go through to the live shows.

MailOnline can reveal that Gamu is currently holed up at her home in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire. Her mother came to the door earlier today and told reporters that her daughter didn't want to speak to anyone about being 'booted off' the show.

At the weekend meanwhile, while Gamu was note perfect, her rival Waissel appeared to forget the words to Charlie Chaplin's Smile. She then broke down in tears, before being allowed to start again in her performance before judge Cheryl Cole and her close friend, Black Eyed Pea Will.I.Am.

After her somewhat feeble attempt, Will.I.Am appeared to dismiss her, saying: 'She messed that up!' whereas Cheryl simply labelled her a 'drama queen.'

Many viewers are accusing Cheryl of sacrificing better singers and picking the more divisive Katie for the sake of generating headlines for the show.

MailOnline can reveal that dozens of viewers have already lodged complaints with Ofcom over the decisions made about who went through last night too. The watchdog will be collating all the complaints received will reveal more details on Wednesday morning.

  • Over 128,000 people have joined the 'Gamu should have got through' group on Facebook

  • Show insiders were concerned over Gamu's immigration status

Cheryl Cole was at the centre of a race row last night after failing to put a black contestant through to the X Factor final despite admitting that she had an outstanding voice.

On Sunday, Mrs Cole decided that Gamu Nhengu, who had been one of the favourites to win the ITV talent show, would not go through to the last 12.

After selecting two contestants who had trouble with their auditions - Cher Lloyd and Katie Waissel - Cheryl told the 18-year-old Zimbabwean: 'You are extremely adorable. You've got a great voice.

'It's just a question for me now as to whether you brought the star quality that I was looking for yesterday.'

And the Daily Mail can reveal that Cheryl has not picked Gamu as her 'wildcard' contestant for this weekend.

After hearing Cheryl's decision on Sunday night, which was watched by a huge 16.2million viewers - a record at this stage in the competition, and more than tuned in to the 2008 final - critics bombarded social networking websites with complaints.

Britain's Got Talent star Amanda Holden ranted on her Twitter: 'Very shocked to see Gamu not thru. Waste!'

This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby added: 'If Gamu does come back as a wildcard she could go on and win it. She is going to have the whole nation behind her. That is an advantage!'
