Dermot O'Leary's nazi words on the X factor

The heartbreaking story - made in a 1982 starring Meryl Streep as Sophie - follows a mother who is forced while in Auschwitz by the Nazis to decide which of her two children to save for death.

Dermot used the phrase, on Sunday after his co judges, Louis, Dannii and Cheryl, to keep tuned question Simon Amie Belle at the expense of the Diva fever - both maintained from Simon.

The host, 37, said: "Simon, I have to questions, it's Sophie's choice, but who would have gone with?"

But the 51-year old refused to answer - claimed it wasn't fair to choose between his actions.

Hundreds of people flooded Internet forums to complain, Dermot's "insensitive" comments.

It was said: "The point was indeed in really poor taste."

Another said: "You not compare, X factor to millions of people killed in the Holocaust."

But others defended Dermot, say, the use of Sophie's choice was simply a common turn of phrase.

The host apologized later on his Twitter page for any offence he may have caused write: "Hey, thanks for tweets re: Sophie's choice."

"Obviously no offence determines only off-hand reference to a movie, no serious comparison."
