Angelina Jolie sparkles at the London premiere of her new film Salt

Angelina Jolie

She has spent the past week battling damaging claims about her private life. But if Angelina Jolie was feeling stressed, she hid it well as she made a dignified arrival in Leicester Square last night for the premiere of her latest film, Salt.

Only on closer inspection did the 35-year-old actress show signs of her private turmoil.

Bulging veins could be seen on her arms, hands and fingers – which experts have attributed to too much exercise.  And the star's increasingly slender figure was swamped in a £3,000 pink and silver Amanda Wakeley gown, with a thigh-high split revealing her spindly legs.

Angelina received a rapturous welcome from the crowds at the London premiere of her highly anticipated action film Salt.

A black and white carpet was laid for the arrival of Hollywood's biggest female star and nobody shone brighter than the 35 year old in a nude-coloured Amanda Wakely sequinned dress.

She waded straight in signing autographs and taking her time to walk the carpet which was specially printed with the name of the film.

But there were concerns over her health as she was looking extremely thin as she stopped and talked to fans that had been waiting outside the Empire cinema in Leicester Square all day.

Angelina said actor partner Brad Pitt was unable to attend due to work commitments but added: 'We miss London...we love it here.'

In the film, Miss Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent on the run after being labelled a Russian spy.

The star flew to the UK with her two-year-old twins, Knox and Vivienne, in tow.

Her partner Brad Pitt remained in Los Angeles, shooting his new film, Moneyball, and looking after the couple's four other children – Maddox, eight, Pax, six, Zahara, five and four-year-old Shiloh.

Miss Jolie has been faced with explosive allegations in an unauthorised biography, which claims that she was driven to rebellion as a result of her mother abandoning her when she was a baby.

The book, by Andrew Morton, was released in the U.S. two weeks ago and went straight in at number three on the New York Times' bestseller list of hardback non-fiction.

It is not on sale in the UK for legal reasons.

Leona Lewis goes to Angelina’s premiere dressed as a green Quality Street triangle

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 12:40 PM PDT

Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis appeared to have ignored the savoury title of Angelina Jolie's new film Salt and went along as a Quality Street sweet to the premiere instead.

The Bleeding Love star was wearing a bright green, angular, shiny frock that seemed to have taken its inspiration from the Big Green Triangle in the box of chocs.

The triangles are now on sale as a single chocolate as well as being available in the ubiquitous selection tin.

And committed animal-lover Leona will be no doubt be pleased to hear that the praline-filled pieces contain no gelatine and are totally vegetarian.

Still, her jewel-bright, tailored  mini dress - albeit a slightly more turquoise hue than the green triangle - was beautiful compared to the green monstrosity that fellow songstress Bjork was spotted sporting earlier this month.

That was less green triangle and more Incredible Hulk.

Ever since losing weight, Leona, 25, has finally started to dress her age, ditching her previously  more formal look of floor-length frocks for edgier styles.

She's also been seen out and about in London rather a lot lately, having previously spent the majority of her time in LA.

The nights out coincide with the end of her Labyrinth tour and her split with  from long-term love Lou Al-Chamaa in June.

Alexandra Burke takes pup along to six-hour record company meet

Alexandra Burke is developing a canny knack for keeping herself in the headlines of late with her saucy wardrobe and dalliances with the likes of Danny Cipriani.

After wearing her sprayed-on tight trousers and bra top at the weekend, last night, the Bad Boys star was wearing barely-there denim hotpants and carrying the cutest Yorkshire terrier this side of the Pennines.

The X Factor winner was emerging from a six-hour meeting at the London headquarters of her record label Sony.

Perhaps they were discussing her next eye-popping outfits as well as her musical output...

The star is promoting her new single Start Without You, which she performed on the television for the first time on Alan Carr's Chatty Man on Sunday.

It's the fourth single to be taken from her 2009 debut album Overcome but it's so incredibly catchy, it's likely to chart with or without the short shorts.

It hits the shops on September 6.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that the singer will be swapping her skimpy wardrobe and heels for fleeces and hiking boots as she prepares to conquer the Inca Trail.

Along with Fearne Cotton, Denise Van Outen and Holly Willoughby, Alexandra will trekking 45km at high altitude to Machu Picchu in Peru for Breast Cancer Care.

She'll also be having a break from her brothers.

Alexandra Burke cavorts with male dancers in sexy new video

As one of the hottest young pop stars in the UK, Alexandra Burke is no stranger to male attention.

So it was no surprise to see the 21-year-old singer appeared to be in her element as she cavorted with a group of male dancers in the video for her new single Start Without You.

Wearing a series of sexy black outfits, including a lacy leotard and black tights, as well as a sheer bodysuit over black underwear, Alexandra is seen performing a raunchy dance routine with the dancers.

Start Without You is produced by renowned producer RedOne, who has been described as the man behind Lady Gaga's unique musical sound.

It's the fourth single to be taken from her 2009 album Overcome and is the latest in a string of successes for X Factor winner Alexandra.

As well as performing at music events including T4 On The Beach and Leeds Party In The Park, Alexandra is planning to go on tour next year.

Cheryl Cole’s friend exposes her ‘realtionship’ with Derek Hough as a ‘cover-up’

There has been 'are they or aren't they' speculation for months, but even sceptics were beginning to wonder if that the relationship between Cheryl Cole and Derek Hough was the real thing.

He remained by her side constantly throughout her battle with malaria, and they have been pictured together constantly since she flew out to LA to be by his side.

But while there is little doubt that they are extremely close, Cheryl's friend, the boxer Amir Khan, has disclosed that the relationship is a 'cover -up' encouraged by the pair to ward off the paparazzi.

I had dinner with Cheryl and Derek in LA last week,' the 23-year-old told Grazia magazine.

'He's not her boyfriend. They're not going out. It's all just a cover-up to keep photographers at bay.'

The 25-year-old dancer's sudden appearance as Cheryl's closest friend and confidant as her marriage to Ashley Cole broke down was earlier dismissed as platonic.

He was widely believed to be gay - a claim he has denied - and the pair have never been spotted holding hands or kissing.

But after their last-minute getaway to Tanzania in June, and his move into her home during her recovery from malaria, it appeared as though their romance was definitely on.

Last week X Factor choreographer Brian Friedman allegedly  'confirmed' they were an item, calling them 'A lovely couple.'  But he subsequently denied the story.

Leona Lewis gets a new horseshoe tattoo

Leona Lewis seems to be becoming ever more enamoured of equines if her latest  tattoo is anything to go by.

The Bleeding Love singer has had a miniature horseshoe inked onto her left wrist to go along with the love poem to ponies that's inscribed down her spine.

Since splitting with long-term love Lou Al-Chamaa in June, it seems that horses are providing the star with her only stable relationship.

Leona doesn't always have an easy time with the four-hoofed kind however. She was forced to delay the recording of her second album after she was headbutted by a horse in April last year.

Tiny tat: Leona shouldn't have felt too much pain after being inked with this minute marking

And she ended up on crutches this January after her horse Goose threw her off.

The 2006 X Factor winner only started riding having found fame and she confessed to Your Horse magazine in May this year that she was still learning.

Meanwhile, the singer also unveiled another dress from her sexy new wardrobe.

The singer appeared to have ignored the savoury title of Angelina Jolie's new film Salt and went along as a Quality Street sweet to the premiere instead.

Alexandra Burke claims she is the hardest working sister and daughter in pop

Life is pretty non-stop for Alexandra Burke.

She has a very successful music career which takes her all around the world and has been in constant demand since winning the X Factor in 2008.

But when her pop star day stops, she goes into 'big sister' mode to take care of her two brothers, who she says have come to rely on her since her mother became ill.

Her mother Melissa is very poorly with kidney failure and is unable to take care of Alexandra, 21, and her two brothers Aaron, 17, and David, 23.

Speaking to Look magazine, the singer said: 'It's my duty to look after her, so I make sure she has her shopping delivered and whatever she needs is paid for.

'My family see me as the backbone and that's why my brothers are living with me at the moment.'

TV blamed for old shows, swearing and violence

TV The repeat offenders

TV The repeat offenders

More than half of older viewers believe television has deteriorated in the past year because of the soaring number of repeats, bad language and violence.

Media regulator Ofcom found that 53 per cent of over-65s believe standards have fallen and the quality and range of programmes have worsened.

Almost two thirds of those surveyed said part of their dissatisfaction was down to the increased number of repeats on screens, while a quarter were unhappy with the level of bad language and the variety of shows available.

Christian Clarke (John Partridge) and Zainab Masood (Nina Wadia) argue in EastEnders

Violence was another problem, with 15 per cent saying programmes were using endless fight scenes in a gratuitous manner.

And it is not just older viewers who feel broadcasters are increasingly falling short - 40 per cent of those aged between 40 and 64 agree.

Last year, the five main channels broadcast 30,485 hours of original programming - down almost 8 per cent on 2008, and the lowest level for more than seven years.

The BBC has outlined a 10 per cent cut in new programmes by 2012 as director general Mark Thompson said it would do 'fewer things better'.

Around 8 per cent of BBC1 shows and almost 30 per cent of BBC2 programmes are repeats.

X Factor contestant to lose her job after boss sees her auditioning on a ’sick day’

Fiona Robertson

Fiona Robertson

Fiona Robertson

A woman who pulled a sickie to audition for the X Factor is facing the sack - after her bosses recognised her on the show.

Fiona Robertson, 25, performed in front of Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole in a bizarre routine as the Wicked Witch of the West in April this year.

But she is now facing disciplinary action after she was recognised by her bosses at Wookey Hole Caves, Somerset, where she works as a £50,000-a-year entertainer.

Fiona had claimed she was ill with flu on the day of the audition but was rumbled when a preview of the new X Factor series featuring her picture appeared in newspapers.

Daniel Medley, Director of Wookey Hole Caves, said Fiona was now facing disciplinary action.

He said: 'We have been extremely pleased with how well Fiona has settled in and taken to the role - she has an enchanting way with people.

'But we now feel very let down and cannot believe that she has used her fame from Wookey Hole Caves to further her career whilst still working for us.

'We feel we have been used. I was genuinely shocked when I saw her in the papers, she was even wearing her Wookey Witch costume.

'And to think she may have taken a day's sick leave as well to attend the audition, this is just totally unacceptable and we are considering disciplinary action.'

Natalie Imbruglia needs help getting into cab wearing skintight miniskirt

Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia had to get a little help from her friends to stop herself making a Big Mistake when she struggled to get in a taxi wearing a very tight mini-skirt last night.

The giggling Australian singer, 35, was having trouble getting into the waiting black cab without exposing too much after a night out with pals including David Walliams and his new model wife Lara Stone.

The hem of Natalie's dark blue and cream lace skirt clearly kept riding up the brunette beauty's endless legs - making it difficult to depart with any decorum.

But a friend who'd joined her at London's swanky Nobu Berkley restaurant and a doorman raced to her rescue and managed to lift the slightly glazed-looking star into the black cab with her dignity intact - and without her skimpy skirt getting Torn.

The night out was an early birthday dinner for Little Britain star David, who's 39 tomorrow.

He married Lara, 26, in May this year after a whirlwind romance, but had previously been linked to former Neighbours star Natalie, with David once describing her as his 'dream woman'.

The pair have remained firm friends ever since. In fact, they're so close, Natalie was even invited to David's stag do.

And despite Natalie perhaps being a little tired after her big night out or maybe having had one too many shandies - hence needing a leg-up into the car - she looked tanned, radiant and beautiful nonetheless.

The X Factor alternative good for artists

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 11:38 AM PDT

The latest talent-spotter to enter a crowded marketplace is offering unsigned acts a cooperative record deal along with their taste of success. But is it as fair as it sounds?

For nearly a decade, Simon Cowell has dominated the format of talent contest TV. In the process, the Pop Idol and X Factor machines have come to dominate the charts, leaving bands and artists that don't fall into the narrow formula of these shows struggling for broader attention.

More recently, rivals have attempted to get in on Cowell's act. In 2007, MobileAct Unsigned (which turned into Orange unsignedAct in 2008) gave exposure to artists on Channel 4, with Lauren Laverne, Alex James, Jo Whiley and record executive Simon Gavin taking the place of Cowell, Cheryl et al. Maybe it was because the show wasn't shown on prime-time telly but on Sunday afternoons, or maybe it just wasn't very good, but I've yet to see any of the contestants – or even the winners – make any headway in the aftermath (Tommy Reilly, anyone?).

The latest show of this kind is Must Be the Music, which Sky claims is, well, about the music. It strikes me, however, as being a bit like a cross between Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor, with Dizzee Rascal, Jamie Cullum and Sharleen Spiteri buzzing their approval or disapproval of the competing acts. With The X Factor coming back to our TV screens this autumn, it looks like weekends will be saturated with music talent competitions.

But there's more. Entering what now appears to be a slightly overcrowded space is The Source (not affiliated with the hip-hop magazine), which launched last month. Will it be able to compete?

Although saying in a press release that "a revolution is about to hit the music business" may be a bit of an exaggeration, the show is at least trying to go about selecting the winner in a more community-orientated way than any of Orange unsignedAct, The X Factor or Must Be the Music, with the public making the decisions right from the start.

Here's how it works: the viewers vote for their favourite acts and the top 120 go through to the TV show, which airs daily on Sky 203 and Channel M (Freeview 200). Then there'll be a weekly show with celebrity and artist interviews, which will also screen the most popular videos of the week. We7, 106.1 Rock Radio and Peter Hook's Manchester nightclub The Factory are also involved with the project. It'll all end with a live final, still without any judges, in which the winner will take home £10,000 and a cooperative record deal.

So, what does this deal entail? The Source told me that the record deal on offer consisted of two options. The first is a 360-degree deal from which they earn 50% of the profit from downloads, live events, merchandise and PRS. This would only be better than a traditional record deal when it came to downloads, so it's unlikely many songwriters would give away 50% of publishing unless they got a massive advance (and the same goes for live and merchandising). The second option would be a service through which artists could raise money through crowdsourcing and self-promotion, with some assistance – then they'd earn more than 50%. However, I'm told that this cooperative record deal is "still in progress".

I'm not suggesting the show are intending to rip musicians off; they appear to be well-intentioned and want to create an artist-friendly venture. It does, however, make it look like they're kind of making it up as they go along. They told me the artists would get 50% of the revenue from the votes that go to them, based on £1 per phone or text message. When asked to expand, they say the breakdown is still unconfirmed, but that they expect the artists to get around 30-33p, which "is 50% of the net profit". If this sounds low, compare it to The X Factor, which rakes in a fortune from phone votes while giving none to the contestants.

None of this really matters unless they manage to actually get a big viewing audience. The Source's initial press release refers to the "Rage against the X Factor phenomenon" – the Facebook campaign that hauled Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name to Christmas No 1 ahead of the Cowell-backed Joe McElderry – as an example of "a groundswell of opinion that something must change, new music should be supported and nurtured and the old ways of exploitation and corporate control are out of date and out of touch with what the people want". But the Rage Against the Machine phenomenon was more of a statement of what people don't want than what they do want. Another Facebook campaign called Storm the Charts, with 30,000 members, chose 40 original songs from acts not signed to majors and who'd never appeared in the charts, asking people to download them in one specific week on 4 July this year. None of them entered the top 75.

"Being a musician is not the same as it used to be," says Hook, formerly the bass player of Joy Division and New Order. "The record company used to take you out for a meal, now it's the other way around. Musicians need to be business-minded, nowadays. It's not all sex, drugs and rock n' roll – especially when you're starting out." Asked if being a musician will effectively be the same as being a plumber or any other skilled trade, he answers: "If we can earn as much money as a plumber, that will be a great start."

It remains to be seen whether any of the artists entering The Source will earn anything close to what a plumber does – or even a busker.

JLS go for a hair-rising ride on 85mph rollercoaster

The JLS boys

The JLS boys in park

The prospect of trying to break America is a daunting one even for the most established band.

So it's no wonder JLS decided to take some time off during their time in America and let off some steam on a mammoth 85mph rollercoaster in Texas.

Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Oritsé Williams and JB Gill looked as though they were having the time of their lives as they held their hands up while enjoying the thrills of the Titan ride at the Six Flags Over Texas theme park in Arlington.

The boys have been in America shooting the video for their new single Love You More, as well as trying to make a name for themselves in the notoriously hard to break U.S.

But it was a mixture of work and play as the boys made the most of the the theme park ahead of a performance at the attraction later in the evening.

As well as taking on the mega Titan ride, the group also had a go on the log flume after Ortisé insisted they try it out.

On their official Twitter page, JLS wrote: 'Oritse finally got on his beloved log flume!' as well as posting a picture of themselves on the ride.

But the excitement got a bit much for Aston, whose photograph on the log flume was censored because he decided to flash his six pack as he went past the camera.

Marvin tweeted: 'Aston lifted up his top on the ride so they censored his picture!!! Haha!'

X Factor winner Shayne Ward after two years of silence is now the invisible man

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 11:26 AM PDT

Shayne Ward

Shayne with Simon Cowell

Lining up outside the X Factor auditions this year, once again, were thousands of people all desperate to 'live the dream'. They expect that appearing on the show
-which starts its seventh year tomorrow night - will be their ticket to fame and fortune.

It worked for Leona Lewis, it made millionaires out of JLS, and Alexandra Burke appears to be sporting a different designer handbag and handsome man almost every other week.

But what of Shayne Ward? The young man who had the looks to match his exceptional voice and the sweetly playful character which made him stand out from every other X Factor winner.

Not forgotten: Shayne is hoping to release a new album in time for Christmas - but will anyone buy it?

Shayne's first single sold 200,000 copies more than Leona's. His first album went
platinum in little over a week. Judge Sharon Osbourne drooled when he sang in front of her, Heat magazine put him on its cover week after week, declaring him 'the sexiest reality star ever', and nobody questioned claims that the next Robbie Williams had been found.

As for a sob story - well, Shayne had that, too. His background was even worse than an episode of Shameless. He has six siblings, was brought up in one of Manchester's toughest areas, has an X Factor winner: Shayne with Simon Cowell in 2005 alcoholic father imprisoned for the rape of a pensioner and a brother who was arrested for murder, but later cleared of charges. Shayne had overcome all these disadvantages to
become an exemplary young man.

As he was crowned the show's second winner, the world waited for him to emerge a fully-fledged star.

The problem is, we're still waiting.

It all started well. That's My Goal was the fourth-fastest-selling single ever. His first album sold more than half-a-million copies in the UK, while his second, Breathless, which came out in 2007, sold another half-million here and made him a huge star in
Asia. But since then? Nothing.

Cheryl to be divorced by the time she joins X Factor

CHERYL COLE

Cheryl and Ashley Cole

Cheryl Cole will be divorced by the time she returns to The X Factor.

The star will officially be free of cheating footballer Ashley Cole when she rejoins Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh live on air in October, the Daily Mail has learned.

It will mark the end of a turbulent few months for the Girls Aloud singer, who was forced to abandon her role on the talent show after she was struck down with malaria.

But in a move that might be seen as plumbing the depths of bad taste, the moment she collapsed during auditions will be screened when the show returns tomorrow night.

An estimated 11million fans will see her lying across some chairs as she is struck down with the illness, which at one point was considered life threatening.

Mrs Cole is seen telling the judges: 'I don't feel well at all. I am definitely coming down with something.' Cowell then asks her: 'Are you ill?'

She had returned from a holiday in Tanzania, Africa, with friend Derek Hough when she came down with the disease.

To tie in with her return to the Mrs Cole is in talks to reveal all about her tumultuous year in an interview on Piers Morgan's ITV show, Life Stories.

A source said: 'Piers would definitely be the person with whom Cheryl would feel comfortable discussing what has been an extremely difficult year.

'Piers does seem to have a knack of getting celebrities to open up – if you can get Simon Cowell to shed a tear, you can do anything.'

It was announced that Mrs Cole was separating from her husband Ashley in February after a series of lurid revelations about the Chelsea and England footballer's infidelity.

Last night a source close to Mrs Cole said the singer had not decided whether to give up the £6million Surrey mansion the couple shared during their three and a half year marriage, despite reports that she was selling it.

There is nothing like reality TV to bring out the best... and worst in people.

A teenager has revealed how her relationship with her best friend has been destroyed an X Factor audition that went horribly wrong, ending in a sensational on-stage fight.

In the episode to be aired on Saturday night, 17-year-old Lisa Parker is punched in the face by her best friend Abbey Johnston, as the judging panel react in horror.

'I think Abbey only hit me once but then a security guard grabbed her and another one pushed me against the wall so I couldn't get to her.

JACI STEPHEN: Insight into the week’s soaps

Sam is distraught

Carl King and Eve Jenson

While the rest of the country suffers in the recession, soap characters aren't so much cutting their coats according to their cloth as ordering up whole new wardrobes.

In Coronation Street, Owen has agreed to buy the yard from Bill, while Sally is dreaming of a 'lovely self-assembly kitchen'. (Careful, Sally, you know where Gail's desire for a new kitchen landed her  -  and where it landed the kitchen fitter, come to that.) In EastEnders, Ronnie and Roxy were celebrating yet another re-launch of R&R, while Phil has somehow found enough money to set up a veritable Threshers in his living room.

Everyone still has enough money to spend in their locals every day, too, while the rest of us have had to cut back and make entertainment for ourselves in our homes. The best that the Street's Deirdre and Ken can do in this respect is a radio that is the size of a small bungalow, sitting in their dining room.

On Monday morning, Deirdre was listening to Dusty Springfield singing I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself, and that was the highlight of her week (a little ironic, too, given that she knew exactly what to do with herself when Lewis lunged at her a couple of weeks back). Nobody watches TV anymore; nobody talks about popular shows such as The X Factor; and nobody watches and talks about... well, soap operas. A TV's not just for Christmas, people, it's for life. It is life.

LESBIAN CHOIR GIRLS GET IT ON. YES, REALLY.

When you consider what Sally let Rosie get away with when she was growing up, I can't help feeling she's being a bit hard on Sophie. The girl only went to a music festival, and now she's not allowed to use a computer, a phone, or have any contact with Sian

Konnie Huq

Since she took over from Holly Willoughby as Xtra Factor presenter Konnie Huq has been doing her best to keep up with her fellow X Factor stars in the style stakes.

But despite her best efforts, she made a fashion faux pas today as she donned a clingy grey jumper with a white bra underneath.

The bright flashes from photographers as Konnie left the GMTV studios only highlighted her mismatched combination.
The 35-year-old, who wore her hair scraped back into a pony tail, was clearly unaware of her fashion mistake and was all smiles as she showed off her legs in a patterned mini-skirt.During last year's filming, judges Dannii Minogue, 38, and Cheryl Cole, 27, were constantly compared for their X Factor outfit choices.

But while Dannii is on maternity leave and Cheryl recovers from Malaria, it is  Konnie and temporary judge Nicole Scherzinger who are now the ITV talent show's women in the spotlight.

The X Factor kicks off with a bang on ITV tomorrow night when sparks fly between X judges Cheryl and Simon Cowell when he brands her a 'brat' in the new series which starts tomorrow.

Framed by her signature halo of golden ringlets, Taylor Swift donned a traditional fairy-tale wedding gown designed by Reem Acra and walked down the aisle with British actor Toby Hemingway.

However, the 20-year-old's wedding was strictly for her latest single, Mine. She's still very much on the market.

The single is the first song from her upcoming album Speak Now, which will be released on October 25.

Taylor filmed the wedding scene in Kennebunk, Maine, where she emerged from a church with Toby as guests blew bubbles around them.

The Grammy winner, whose hits include Love Story, is set to return to the same location  for the August 27 launch of the song, where she'll take part in a half-hour special introducing the video.

While the video in its entirety is still under wraps, there is a sneak peek available below.

Choosing Toby as her on-screen groom, Taylor said of the Black Swan star: 'I was doing some more research and watched another movie he was in called The Covenant.

X Factor is back on ITV1 and despite ourselves, millions of us are drawn to it once more, like moths to a flame, as we try to spot the act which will top the Christmas chart. At this stage, of course, no one knows the identity of the winner, not even the four celebrity judges. Well, you'd have to be clairvoyant, wouldn't you?

Step forward Jusstine Kenzer, a jolly 42-year-old Californian who's carving out something of a reputation as a celebrity psychic, both in the States and, more recently, over here.

In fact there's no need to worry that there'll be a great void with Cheryl Cole missing from much of X-Factor's early stages after her malaria. Jusstine is Cheryl's psychic healer, so presumably knew in advance what she was going to be up against. And if we can't have Cheryl's thoughts on the way it's going to pan out, Jusstine is surely the Next Best Thing?

We meet in the restaurant of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge ('I like its energy,' she told me) and Jusstine is doing something irritating with what looks like a brass coaster. Every time a new dish or drink is placed in front of her, the coaster is temporarily slid beneath it to 'clean out the energy from your aura and help your body digest better'.

I am her worst nightmare: a middle-aged English male, my prejudices all in a row. She's been working as a psychic for half her life now, she says, and it's both a gift and a curse. But can she really foretell the future?

Man behaving badly and horsing around

Martin Clunes

After his 2008 series, A Man And His Dogs, Clunes seems to be attempting to corner the market in cuddly documentaries about man's best friends.

After her recent hijacking of the subject of cats, perhaps Joanna Lumley should regularly check her car brakes.

Of course, Clunes seems far too amiable to nobble a venerable English icon and this rumpled geniality is a large part of his charm.

But I was surprised by the intriguing premise set out at the start of Horsepower. 'Why would such a huge, lovely, flighty animal let me get on his back and ride him?' asked Clunes.

It was this little hook that drew me into a world that I've never been tempted to visit. I assumed Horsepower would be all jolly hockey sticks and aren't gymkhanas terribly fun.

But it wasn't; it was genuinely fascinating, even for a confirmed equine non-fan such as myself, and Clunes, as a relative latecomer to all things horsey, made for an accessible guide.

Clunes's first overseas jaunt, to a race meeting in Dubai proved to be slightly unnerving on two counts.

Upon encountering jockey Frankie Dettori, Clunes attempted a hug, but Dettori is so short and Clunes so tall the little fella looked as though he was trying to shin up an oak.

Then the horse trainer Luca Cumani informed us horseracing essentially exploits the horse's ancient flight instinct that tells it that if all the others are running there must be something large and ferocious behind them and that it better run like the clappers, too.

But that unsettling revelation was countered by the first episode's undoubted highlight when the shambling Clunes was taught to communicate with his horse Chester by the horsewhisperer Monty Roberts.

To be frank frank, I've never had a good relationship with horses.

Ever since I was 12, when a boisterous Shire horse chased me around his field on the family farm, I've been wary of them.

They have big teeth and pack a kick like thunder - I'll steer clear, thanks.

So I wasn't exactly bursting with enthusiasm to watch Martin Clunes: Horsepower, the new series from the Doc Martin star

Aston Merrygold

Madison Welch

Just last month, he admitted he was finding it hard to find a new girlfriend - but it seems that JLS star Aston Merrygold's lovelife is back on track once more.

The Beat Again singer has reportedly embarked on a new romance with girlband singer Madison Welch from wannabes Miss Millionaire.

Aston was apparently introduced to former glamour girl Madison a few weeks back and they've been inseparable ever since - to the extent they've even been out shopping for groceries together.

A spokesperson for JLS told  MailOnline: 'They have only been on a couple of dates and it is very early days.'

Aston must be made up. Just last month, the Beat Again singer said he had enlisted the help of loved-up bandmate Marvin Humes and his girlfriend, The Saturdays' Rochelle Wiseman to help his quest to fine love.

Aston said: 'I've asked them to keep looking and I'd love to go on a double date. Maybe my perfect lady will come along soon. There's hope for that.'
