Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne are sitting side by side on an over-stuffed Chesterfield in the banqueting hall of a haunted Gothic manor.

There's none of the high-tech plastic and chrome modernity of the judges' bench in The X Factor where their friendship began. instead, it's all polished silver plate and ornate candelabra.

'Being with you Louis,' coos Sharon, 'is just like coming home again.' For the team of Walsh and Osbourne are back together, doing what they do best: judging X Factor contestants.

It's been a two-year stand-off for Sharon, who walked out of the show just before the 2008 series began because she wouldn't work a second year with new judge Dannii Minogue.

Now she is with Louis at the adare Manor hotel in Co. limerick for the Judges' houses stage, helping him choose which of the eight over-28-year-olds he will mentor for the live shows.

Their final three, along with those chosen in the other categories by fellow judges simon Cowell (groups), Cheryl Cole (girls) and Dannii (boys), will be revealed on iTV1 tomorrow. 'it didn't take a lot for Louis to persuade me,' says Sharon, 57. 'I've missed The X Factor, the people and the buzz of the whole show. Louis and I are great friends and we phone each other all the time, having a laugh and a gossip.'

Louis originally asked for Sharon's help when his Judge's house was going to be in Las Vegas, not far from her home in Los Angeles.

But then the venue was switched to Ireland, which created a logistical problem for Sharon, who appears every week as a judge on America's Got Talent.

Simon Cowell has delivered his verdict on his X Factor groups - and it seems at least one act doesn't stand much of a chance.

The judge and mentor has given a scathing appraisal of Diva Fever, the camp duo who got through to the last round with their rendition of Bad Romance.

Cowell said: 'If they get through, they are the luckiest people in the world'.

Girl group Husstle will no doubt be pleased to hear the music mogul was rather more impressed with their act.

'Determined, very focused and quite talented', Simon said about the midriff-baring band of five.

But they have some strong competition in their category and their 50-year-old mentor thinks FYD are is the 'dark horse in the contest'.

When speaking of the four hunks from The Reason, he said: 'I've not seen a band like this for a while.  Likeable and genuine.'

He was also impressed with Belle Amie, who he thinks are good singers and feels that One Direction has worked hard to 'make it happen'.

simon cowell gives the x factor finalists licence to behave badly

Simon Cowell is encouraging bad behaviour from the X Factor hopefuls - despite tales of prostitution, drug-taking and wild parties blighting the show.

The music mogul said he wanted the final 12 contestants to 'be their age and do what they like' rather than 'sitting in the library until three in the morning'.

The finalists have already been picked and millions of fans will find out who they are this weekend, ahead of the first live show on October 9.

As the Daily Mail revealed this week, they have been moved into a £3.5million mansion in North London, leaving the millionaire neighbours fearful of rowdy behaviour.

And the mood of the locals is unlikely to have improved after Cowell's latest comments.

He said: 'You have got to have some sort of control in there, but at the end of the day you want to have the personalities through so it's fun.

'They are entering the music business for all the right reasons, and that is not to sit in the library till three in the morning. I am just trying to encourage them this year to be their age and do what they like if they have a career as a pop star, and for everyone to be a bit more relaxed about it.'

She might be wearing camouflage trousers - but there's no way Cheryl Cole was ever going to blend in with the crowds when she arrived at her book signing earlier today.

The glowing star rocked up to Waterstones flagship bookstore in London's Piccadilly to meet her fans and inscribe the fly leaf of her first book - Through My Eyes.

And the X Factor judge certainly had the 'Wow Factor' in her tight khaki trews, glossy chestnut hair, shiny caramel satin shirt and metallic strappy sandals.

There to greet her were dozens of screaming fans, many of whom had queued overnight for a chance to glimpse the star.

Dedicated fans staked their pitch at around 4pm yesterday to camp out, but kept their spirits high through the chilly temperatures by singing some of the pop star's hits.

Some admitted to photographers that they had skipped school for the event, without telling their parents, while others had even travelled from as far as Scotland to meet the X Factor judge.

And the happy campers made sure to keep warm last night in I Love Cheryl Cole shirts and their sleeping bags.

While one even wore a Cheryl Cole face mask while holding on tightly to the highly anticipated autobiography.
